The 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R is the direct successor to the KTM 790 Adventure R – the bike that won the 2019 bikesales Bike of the Year award. The 790 was lauded for its exceptional off-road chops and it’s very decent tarmac performance. They say you shouldn’t mess with a good thing, but KTM has never been a stickler for the rules. As a 2020 790 Adventure S owner, I’ve had a few issues: -stalling on cold starts -leaky front brake reservoir (installed incorrectly and over filled) -leaky front sprocket seal (recalled) -faulty rear ABS brake line (recalled) Otherwise, it’s performed perfectly for 6,000kms. The OEM components have serious flaws, which can leave the timing chain in a slack. The 890 Adventure R’s are a great bike to ride, best in the category for performance, handling, suspension. Sadly the reliability and KTM aftercare is a liability. Once my cams are fixed I am selling it and won’t buy a KTM again unless they acknowledge the issues and say they are fixed.
